We’ve created this “Name It to Tame It!” free CBT handout to help you to clarify and set goals around a specific problem. We’ll share the download link at the end of the post, but first let’s dive into the subject in this blog post!
Start out by getting specific about the problem.
You might start out with a vague problem like, “I just can’t get motivated to do anything” or “everyone around me is horrible”. These are broad statements, so try asking yourself some questions about the specifics.
Other times, you may have a more specific issue in mind like, “I can’t concentrate at work” or “I yell at the kids more than I’d like”.
In either case, the more specific and defined you can be about the problem you want to work on, the better results you’ll get.
Here are some examples of questions you can ask yourself to help clarify the problem or define it more specifically:
– What is the problem?
– What do I mean when I say…
– Does it happen all the time or just some of the time?
– Does it happen in all areas of my life or specific areas?
– Have there ever been times when I’ve been able to overcome the problem?
It’s important to set one or two goals. Sometimes the goal will be clear and sometimes you’ll need a little help with choosing an effective goal. Our “Name It to Tame It” vlog goes into some detail about setting S.M.A.R.T. goals. That may be helpful to you as you’re setting your goals and you can use our free handout (at the bottom of this post) to guide you through the process.
We think this 4 page printable PDF download will be a valuable tool for you as you work to apply CBT on your own. If you feel you would benefit from added guidance from one of our therapists, please feel free to reach out to us (our contact information is at the bottom of our blog & website).
