Our Story – CMHA Mental Health Week 2023 #MyStory

May 1st – 7th marks the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Mental Health Week, which is dedicated to promoting awareness and reducing stigma around mental health. This year’s theme is “My Story”, which encourages individuals to share their experiences with mental health and to listen to others’ stories with empathy and understanding. In honor of this theme, we want to share the story of one of our founders at Qualia Counselling, Thomas Brown, whose personal experiences have shaped the values and vision of our practice. Through his story, we hope to inspire others to share their own and to promote greater connection and understanding around mental health.

Growing up on a farm in the Canadian prairies, Thomas experienced firsthand the warmth of community and connection that is often found in rural areas. He appreciated the implicit hospitality and support that was part of his community, where neighbors helped each other out and people looked out for one another. However, he also faced challenges in middle school and high school when he didn’t fit in with the conservative elements of his community. These experiences have stayed with him and contributed to his belief that mental health is something that requires ongoing attention and care.

After completing his Masters degree, Thomas founded Qualia Counselling Services, with the aim of creating a welcoming and safe space for people to share their stories and receive top-notch care for their mental health challenges. Along with his co-owner Charity Fleming, Thomas has worked tirelessly to build a practice that not only offers great services but also fosters a sense of community and connection among our clients and staff.

Over the past 13 years, we’ve expanded to several locations and continue to grow, driven by our desire to connect with people’s stories and provide them with the hospitality, warmth, and care they need. At Qualia Counselling, our story is ongoing, and we’re honored to be a part of our clients’ stories as well. Join us this Mental Health Week in sharing your own story with the hashtag #MyStory and let’s continue to build connections and promote mental health together.
